Re: Cycling not going as expected?

Found these excerpts...I've copied and pasted, although I don't know if that's against the rules...

A quick word on pH. Ideally you want the pH of the tank to be ~7.5. The ammonia to nitrIte...

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

I wonder if the "softness" of the water is affecting the cycle progress...Gotta do some research. If I find anything, I'll let you know...:D

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

I'm not sure, but I doubt it. If the weights are for weighting down plants, they should be aquarium safe. That said, I'm really not certain...

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

Oh well, I didn't really think you'd get any...I wonder why you saw Nitrites and then they disappeared? Guess you'll just have to wait...and test...and wait...and test,...well, you get the...

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

Dan, I was suggesting a Nitrate testing in order to rule out that the tank has cycled...I seriously doubt it, though...

That's odd...it doesn't sound like Tetra disease...Hope the cycle speeds up for you, soon!

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

Maybe the poorly fitting media is the problem, and it could be slowing everything down. I think I'd raise the temp a couple of degrees as well...:)

So sorry you lost the tetras...any idea what...

Re: Cycling not going as expected?

Richard, the bacteria grows in the filter naturally to "feed" off the ammonia. Safestart just gives the bactria a boost in starting, if it does as it claims. I would have thought that 11days would...

Re: How do i fix water damage :o(

Oh dear! I think it would be a cause for concern. How big is the tank? Is it an option to move it, and let the stand dry out?

Re: New to cichlids: recommended tankmates

Well, if it were me, I think I'd choose one or the other. They ARE compatible but I wonder what will happen if they breed. Both species will get aggressive when breeding. I've never kept these, so am...

Re: Help or advice please

Algae growth is normal. I can't figure out why you have no Nitrates...maybe the plants are fast growers and you have enough to take care of the Nitrates.

Re: Help or advice please

A cycled tank should be showing some Nitrates...unless it's very heavily planted, or you've been changing a LOT of water.

Re: Help or advice please

I probably shouldn't advise this, but I use the python syphon system so I add water mixed hot and cold from the tap, to get the temp I want. Just make sure to use water conditioner. :)

Hayley, are...

Re: Help or advice please

I wonder what they used to disinfect...I'm thinking that with the tank set up for four months, and many water changes, that would not be the problem. Also, you would have had a problem immediately....

Re: New to cichlids: recommended tankmates

I have a Clown Pleco, and I've tried the Gold Nugget Pleco three times. The Clown is great and doesn't get too big....fairly priced. If you can keep a Gold Nugget Pleco alive, you have my...

Re: Help or advice please

Hayley, the flicking and rubbing indicates to me that there is an irritant in the water OR you have external parasites. I'm not great with diseases, so can not advise with certainty. It could be...

Re: New to cichlids: recommended tankmates

Hello, and welcome! :) What type of Pleco would you be considering? The larger Plecos will outgrow the tank, but one of the smaller species, such as the Clown Pleco should be fine. I can't think of...
