I'm interested in these little ones but I definitely do not want any breeding going on. This issue is troublesome with many fish. I'm interested in these Sparkling Gourami, or Dwarf Gourami, or certain Dwarf Cichlids, but in my tank I have limited room and can't have a bunch, and certainly not fry!

I'm left trying to figure out if 1. any of these are happy as a single or 2. if any are happy with only same-gender or 3. if any that require mixed gender will simply be highly unlikely to breed in a community tank.

Compatibility charts and species profiles assume that eveyone wants to breed and gives great instructions for that, but no help for those of us wanting to *avoid* breeding!

Any tips or experience about any of these or other similar that can be prevented from breeding?

Thanks!
Zambize

How big is your tank zambize? I have never intentionally wanted to breed my fish either zambize for the same reason, but it is very exciting if it does happen.

The ones to specifically avoid would be livebearers, danios and some cichlids, most other fish don't really breed successfully in aquariums unless conditions are perfectly suited to them for breeding. They may spawn and lay eggs, but often all the eggs are eaten or don't hatch.

I love my little sparklers, I have males/females together and I have had them for a while now and they haven't produced fry. The only time they squabble is at mealtimes and it is nothing serious, so you could keep only males or all females if need be, but it is very hard to tell the sex of sparkling gouramis, particularly when they are in the shop. One will be OK on its own but they are shy when it comes to eating, if there are other species of fish around so I would recommend keeping them in a species specific tank.

One Honey Gourami will be happy on his own.

Hi Bernie,

Your fish look lovely and are really interesting - keep us posted on their progress and so pleased you were able to pick up some more of them.

Hi Bernie,

I managed to look up your croaking gouramis. Oh very nice, I can see why they caught your eye in the lfs.

I saw some of these at the LFS today and I thought of this thread.

The two I saw were a light blue color with a white body, almost like a betta.
