Default how many tetras at a time?

i've heard that we should only introduce two to three fish at a time, but if tetras do better in a shoal, is it ok to introduce 6 or 7 tetras at a time into a tank?

I personaly had a very bad exp adding 6 new guppies into a 10g tank (other LFS advised adding 6 at least) that had been set up for a month. The tank I thought was cycled. Within 3 days I saw illness. Every single guppy died even with treatment. I did have mini spikes after adding the 6 guppies. Guppies are not as hardy IMO as tetras or danios (danios probably the toughest out of the 3). If you want to be very careful add 3 at a time. Another thought is do you have QT for the other tetras if you add them at a later date? That is another consideration. It's a hard answer to give you. I go with my gut feeling. Half the time I'm wrong. I recently added 11 fish to a newly set up 20g. because I did not want to go through QT 4 or 5 different times. I felt the tank was big enough and could handle this many fish added. Tank was set up w/ old media from an estabished tank. One week running things seem ok except for some fin nipping and 1 tetra who is eating but stays under the filter (IDK if it is sick).

If you add more then 3 fish I would watch your water stats closley for the first month or so.

.....I hope you're not considering adding those to the tank that is having the cycling problems.

I normaly only add 3 at a time of any fish. If you get 3 shoaling fish & then later add more of the same they will find each other & stay togather. The only way I have ever added more than 3 at a time is to do a major water change. If your having any water problems with your tank I'd wait on adding any fish untill that problem has been taken care of.
