Default Colored Slate

Is colored slate safe for fish? I bought it at the fish store but I don't trust them 100%. I was told the edges should be sanded but they don't feel sharp to me.

Anyone have experience with using colored slate?

the only reason needed for sanding slate would be burs caused by the saw when it was cut. If it doesn't feel sharp to you then you should be ok, but if you want to take extra precaution take 80 grit or coarser (maybe 40-60 grit) and sand it, then take a fine grit (120-220) and sand again. Sanding in such a manor would guarantee no sharp edges. Remember that slate might flake around the edge just a bit and cause a rough or sharp edge (but only if dropped and broken or treated roughly [like if the saw blade that cut it was a tad dull]).

Thanks Grey.

Anyone ever have slate cut their fish and how about the color in the slate? Is it safe? Should I glue it together as I'm making a cave design for my puffers or will it be ok just set together?

I did post this in another thread but thought I might make a topic out of it to get some answers.

I have used slate, in my cichlid tank. If it doesn't have edges sharp to the touch, you're OK. The colour is natural, assuming you're talking about the "burgundy" colour...at least that was the colour of mine. If you can stack it safely, I wouldn't glue it. Set it directly on the glass bottom of the tank, and just place it so it can't collapse...

Mine came from a slate quarry, so I'm assuming slate...I know very little about such things though...

I looked up both Dano to get an idea as I thought I had slate. From the pictures I have it looks like slate as far as shape goes. The color is different from the pictures. The color on mine is different shades of a brick red. If sanded you can see a very light gray color.

Both slate and shale are sedimentary rock. I was only curious. I have used both successfully in aquariums. Shale is easier to use as you can separate the layers with a chisel to change the size and appearance. Slate is a harder rock that isn't as easy to cut or shape. Many people use strips of slate for certain fish to lay eggs on. I have never seen slate with any other color, but dark grey. Shale comes in several shades of brown, and red, but I guess that either might have other colors.

Thank you all for your input. I feel comfortable adding it to the tank now.
