Default Neon Tetras not happy!

Hello again! I have a 30g tank, fully cycled all levels maintained temp varies from 78-80 and have 8neons, 2 3spot gouramis and a catfish in there. Ive noticed lately my neons appear to be squabbling all the time. A certain 1 or 2 tend to chase the others about but when i try to catch them i always end up with th wrong one! Is there any reason they would be acting like this or is this normal? Ive kept neons before and had no problems. Thanks x

I don't think there's anything to worry about. Bickering is common behavior for Tetras. If they are schooling tightly, they may be skittish because of the Gouramis. If they scatter around the tank, they are comfortable...Hope this helps...

OK thanks. They do scatter but just one or two of them chases the others. The gouramis i have are only small too and they dont really bother with them. Thankfully seem to have stopped them flicking too. What other fish would u suggest putting in that dont normally fin nip? The more colourful the better! x

I'm not sure you'll have room with the two three spot Gouramis. They get quite large(6 inches) and become more beligerant as they get older. Check out Harlequin Rasboras...they're lovely and don't nip. You may have room for a school of those. You may have trouble down the road with the two Gouramis. How big is your Catfish going to get?

In many of the Characin speceis (tetras) the males will chase the females hoping to breed. They also nip and play rough amongst them selves. This is why it is reccommended that tetras be kept in groups so as to spread the behavior so no one fish will bear the brunt of the aggression. Sharon's advise on the gourami is a good heads up for the future of your tank.

Ok taken on board! he's only just 2in and is the most timid fish in my tank haha! My catfish is fully grown at 5in and is pretty quiet. Bit worried tho cos ive had 2neons disappear in the last 8wks, Im starting to wonder if my catfish is feeling peckish after dark....

Their just the same, still messing about chasing each other and squabbling. They scatter around the tank tho so seem happy enough. Had to separate the catfish too as another neon disappeared last night.
