Hi

I have a general question about Zebra Danios. I have a 30 gal tank which I have set up within the last month. I added my 2 danios from my old tank at the very start to cycle with. At first they were there normal selves.... darting everywhere, feeding like crazy etc etc. I have always thought that one was bigger than the other and after reading posts from this site I realise now that maybe I have a male and a female.

Since I have started adding more fish to the tank I have realised that the danios have started hiding up.. I haven't seen the smaller one for days and then last night I saw it, just for a moment and then it hid again. Does anyone have any idea why they may be hiding?

I have added the following fish..

1 x dwarf gourami (was 2 but the other died)
1 x pleco
2 x German Blue Ram
5 x Diamond Tetra
6 x Neon
2 x Golden Minnow

Your comments would be greatly appreciated

maybe you oughta try adding a few more. i know they LOVE to school, and a few more may bring it out of its shyness.i have mine with some the fish you have and they havent bothered the danios...the danios are more the pests.

if you can fit a few more in your tank, i would try that maybe 3 or 4 more.

im sure someone else may have a better opinion than mine, but this is what i would try.. good luck.

What "sesq" reccommends is a good idea.......................You indicate that you set the tank up a month ago. Is it cycled?................High ammonia levels will stress the fish and they will not behave naturally......Check your ammonia levels.

Hi

Thanks for you replies.

I have checked the water quality on a regular basis and it is fine. The tank was second hand and the gravel had be kept wet, as had the sponges in the filter so I would like to think that this has helped it establish quite quickly. Previously to me having the tank it had been running for about 3 years. I have also been adding some of the old water from my other tank which has been established about 4 years everytime I have done a water change. (about twice now as i have got baby guppies in that one).

I think I may return the Danios to my smaller guppy tank, as I would like to have some larger fish in my new one. I was going to add 3 or 4 Gold Gourami's in the future once it has matured some more. My kids are also crazing me to get a couple of Angel fish, but I think they will soon gobble up the neons and I wouldn't want that

How much longer do you think I should leave the tank before adding anymore fish

If you feel the tank is in good shape you can add fish when you wish........If it were me, I would do it gradually. Good luck.

Before I would add fish I would figure out a few things.
1. when was tank set up and how long has it been running?
2. what are the water parameters (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, tempurature)

then I would add some live plants and a couple malaysian trumpet snails and wait two weeks to see how the plants and snails do; then I would add a couple fish and wait a week.

If after doing this things are working out then add the fish you want.
