Yes, just put it in the tank and the good bacteria will feed off of it.

did it not smell?
No, it didn't smell. Like I said, I used a small piece. I did it in a 5 gallon tank and used a 1/2 square inch piece.

could you still see it after 4wks?
Yes there was still some left. I just took it out.

and your tank was cycled?
Yes, it was cycled. I checked the water parameters every other day and did 10% water changes after each test.

did you do a water change then before adding your fish?
Just another 10% because my nitrates were a little higher than 20ppm.

sorry if these seem stupid questions
thanks for help
Not at all. You need patience when doing this. I know it is kind of boring to just sit there and watch an empty tank, but it is worth it in the end, knowing that your fish will be healthy.

Another suggestion is if you can find someones old media or a handful of gravel out of an established tank, that will help speed along the process. Some LFS's do sell gravel that is already established with good bacteria.

Best Regards,
Norm

Read the "sticky"at the top of the water quality sub forum page on cycling......There are several ways to cycle tanks, but no matter what you do, it is going to take time(usually 4 to 6 weeks).

This discussion should be continued in the Water Quality and Algae sub forum as a new thread............I am locking this thread because we have gotten away from the orriginal topic of this thread.
