Default Neon Tetras being trapped in filter tube

I have recently put 5 neon tetras in an Eclipse 3 system and all were doing well until I discovered last night that 2 of them had become trapped on the intake tube slats. How do I prevent this from happening in the future? I have put a small mesh filter bag over the tube for now. Any suggestions appreciated!

The mesh around the strainer or an open cell sponge is about the only thing I can think of.

The mesh bag should work well; also, a section of pantyhose works well too if you rubberband it around the tube.
