I hope I'm not falling into a gourami inside joke, but do they seriously croak??

Thanks Kylie! and Cole, it definitely isn't a joke, they actually do croak (they are a pygmy version of the croaking gourami-I have never kept the normal croaking gouramis, so I wasn't sure what sound, if any, they actually made).

I can tell you that for their size, they can produce a very loud sound (unless being underwater amplifies it) & They have literally made me jump a few times from the sound, because you're not expecting it. The first time I heard it LOL! I went around the room looking for what was making the noise, I thought it might be some kind of insect or even a fault with one of the electrical appliances - I then realised that it was the fish, Silly me!

Their sound isn't really a croak, say like a frog or even the sound of a cricket. The best way I can describe it is - I don't know if you can still buy them, but do you remember those toy plastic automatic machine guns/rifles that kids played with, that made a continuous loud, repetitive (very annoying) sound when you pulled the trigger? it's like that but theirs is only 4 or 5 consecutive clicks & not as loud.

Not sure if this analogy makes sense to anyone.

Wow I never knew fish could make noises.

I know how you feel about being scared by a fish, My angles make a loud smack sound when they eat flakes off the surface of the water.

My blue rams make that sound as well which did worry me at first - I thought they were trying to jump out of the water until I realised they were just noisy eaters

You may have noticed that I now have 9 sparkling Gouramis - I picked up the others I ordered a few dys ago.

I saw some at the LFS today I couldn't hear any croaking though.

Thanks, I will try my best concerning the pics.

They only croak occassionally Cole LOL! & actually it's funny, my 5 sparklings I bought the other dy, that are still in a quar. tank (as they were rather thin) haven't made any sound at all but I heard the others croaking from dy 1. - still not absolutely sure why they croak, I have read that only the males make the sound, but not sure if this is correct or not-will have to keep researching.

I was doing a little research the other day and found out that they croak during spawning time, have you noticed any building bubble nests in the Qt tank?

I would suggest putting a cut in half styrofoam cup in the tank so they have a place to build a nest. (it workes for my bettas)
