Default Goldfish at fairs and Carnivals

In my teenage years ( mid 70's ) a lot of the fair and carnival games in England gave away small Goldfish in plastic bags as prizes, I'm sure that practice must have been banned by now. I was just wondering if that ever happen in the USA ? it all seems cruel thinking back on it now.

Thanks

Clive

They still do now at fairs. I went to a local fair, and they had this game if you throw a ball in a cup you win two goldfish.

But the put two goldfish in one bag,and they give you the goldfish if you win the game. The have buckets full of goldfish, and I feel sorry for the fish, because some of them have to stay in bags for a week.

I have seen it here too. In the early 1970'sI won a few by throwing a ping pong ball in the bowl that the fish were in. He was my first fish, he managed to hang in his little fishbowl for a month. poor guy. I am sure they are feeder fish.

That's a shame, I was hoping that practice died out years ago, I guess not

I used to work on the fair! the stall i started working on was one of the said golfish stalls! I never really liked it but the one thing i can say is that the fish are not kept in the bags for weeks! i had to put them in bags as they were won! i had a couple bagged up but i just used to give them away! also when they are put away at night there is air pumps that they put into the bins that the fish are kept in! as to whether they were feeder fish i couldn't tell you! But one of the fish i won when i was a child was actually a Koi Karp! lived for years! so they can't be that bad a condition!

I remember that! I won a couple as a kid. We had your "standard" goldfish bowl at home. Even then I remember thinking 'great, I win the fish that's just been conked by a ball....'. Never knew that the little goldfish were supposed to grow into big ones.

We've never had fish at fairs here, but the new trend now, is to use Goldfish as the "take home gift" at weddings. They're used at individual place settings, and taken at the end of the evening....

That's the first I've heard of that, lets hope it doesn't catch on.

In the 1920s and again in the late 1950s there was a fad in swallowing live goldfish in the good old US.
