Default This is horrible!

Just when I thought things were going my way, I get this monkey wrench thrown into the mix

I was draining the goldfish tank so I could move it onto the new stand, and one of the Celestial Eyes got too close and was sucked right up into the tube. Everything happened so fast , by the time I shut it off I saw, to my horror, that his eyeball had been sucked clean out of the socket and was in the sink .
For those not familiar with Celestial eyes, they have huge eyeballs the sit on top of their head ( hence the name Celestial , as in they are always looking up towards the stars and heaven ) and they are not really full of fluid like a bubble eye, the eyeball itself is really big. So now, this poor little thing has this gaping hole on his face and the excess skin from around it is sagging. there are some white tendon looking things hanging there too. I moved him into a 10 gallon and put antibiotics into the water, to hopefully avoid infection for him. It didnt start bleeding right away, it was a good 5 minutes before I saw any blood at all and it is all pooling up inside the socket. I don't know if this is something that would kill him or not, Ive had fish with one eye before, but not like this! I feel terrible for this poor thing. I hope he will be Ok, I think he was blind in that eye as it is ( Celestials have alot of eye issues as it is ) but it is still very disturbing and I feel really bad

That is terrible! But, you certainly didn't do it on purpose. Accidents happen. I can't even imagine what an awful feeling that must have been for you.

Oh dear, Cher. That must have been terrible. I think the danger now is infection, so keep the water very clean, as well as using antibiotics. If he was blind in that eye, then it won't be an adjustment for him...........

OMG!! How devastating for you and the fish it could have happened to any one of us, so don't blame yourself! I'm so glad I use a little turkey baster now, after reading this!!

If the tank has any decor in it, I would remove anything that he may accidently snag the loose skin/tendons on....If you want to make sure he will be OK I would call a vet that knows about fish, if you want to go that far.

I'm so sorry this happened Cher. I would have been horrified. I have always worried about the suction using a vacuum gravel cleaner. Were you using a python? They seem to be the worst and most dangerous I have used.

I wish your Celestial well.

I was hoping to post today with good news, but sadly and with a heavy heart I must report that he didnt make it and passed away this afternoon

I cried like a baby for this sweet little fish, I feel very guilty for what happened. I know it was an accident, but it still hurts

I will bury him tomorrow, with the rest of our beloved pets

Thank you all for your concern and support. It's nice to be among people who understand. This happened during my daughters birthday party and some family members couldnt understand why I was so upset over a fish...

Stormy, yeah it was a Python. I just got it 2 or 3 weeks ago too Guess I should have left that off my wish list...

I'm so sorry, Cher! I always use a python...and have had no problems. It is a wonderful tool when you have many tanks, some of which are large...don't give up on it....
