Default Vacuuming eco-complete frustration

Someone (I can't remember who!) posted a message saying that vacuuming Eco-complete was pointless and frustrating because it had a tendency to all get sucked up...

I had never considered vacuuming mine before, but thought, "Wow, maybe this is something I need to be doing." So I emailed Betsey at the caribsea company. This is my email:

From Betsey: Hi there, thanks for your question. It is not necessary to vacuum the Eco-Complete. The grains are fine enough that you will not have an issue with detritus collection.

My inquiry: Is it necessary to vacuum the Eco-complete planted substrate?

I hope this helps...

I did post I don't like eco complete because it is hard to clean. I don't know how I feel about the reply.

12 fish and 3 shrimp (slightly over stocked) in my 20g and they make a mess. I see crud sitting up on top of the substrate. I move my java moss to clean under it every 6 weeks or so, it looks very dirty.

I lightly suck the top of the eco complete w/ my vacuum. I suppose I don't have to worry about getting down deep as my live java moss should take care of that? I hope.....

Thank you Greensleeves for checking into that and letting us know their response.

Well, maybe you could email Betsey and see what she suggests. Maybe there are a few 'tricks' or tips that she could share...

betsey@caribsea.com

Good luck! Hope it works out for you

I'm not going to worry about it. I clean it the best I can. Someday my FW fish will be in a 55g. I will more and likely use a different substrate. Thanks tho Greensleeves.

Put a strainer under the end of the vacuum hose and catch the gravel, rinse it, and put it back................

My vacuum has a strainer on the end. Most of eco complete is so fine it's close to sand or smaller. From what I reaD on the package the fine stuff is supposed to fall to the bottom of the substrate. Mine has not done that yet but the tank is still new. Perhaps with time.

What kind of substrate do you use for your planted tanks Dano? I'm looking for something black.

Yeah, I'd imagine that vacuuming that stuff would be a nightmare I can totally see why that would be frustrating.

Mine has separated but it took a couple months to do so.

I use about 1 1/2 in of playsand with about 2 in of medium gravel on top of the sand.
