Default Heater...

Are aquarium heaters supposed to go under the gravel? And is 100 W fine for a 38 gallon?

Heaters don't go under the gravel. There's usually little suction cups included, and the heater sticks on the back glass. I'm not sure about the wattage recommended for a 38gal...I use a 100watt heater for a 30gal. The recommended tank size for your heater should be on the box....

if it helps, I have a 100W in my 2 foot (70L) and 2 x 100 X in my 4 footer. Seems to work fine but we don't get below 15 deg C here.

I'm going to get a visa-therm stealth heater I think. Their 100 Watt heater is meant for tanks up to 30 gallons but their 150 watt is for tanks up to 45 gallons. QUESTION: Since my tank is only 38 gallons (which is only a tiny bit over 30) could I still get away with using the 100 watt heater??

I'd get the bigger one...The 100watt will do, but it will "cut in " more than if it were in a smaller tank.
