Default Tetra Breeding

I've talked to my people at my local fish store and they told me Tetras are relatively hard to breed. I know that generally the females are paler and broader and the males are more symmetrical and brightly colored, however, at what age do tetras reach maturity, and what are the ideal tank conditions? (pH, Hardness, Plants, etc.)

There are those that claim they can sex tetras, but generally it is guessing at best. To get breeding pairs it is best to have 6 and let them sort it out. Tetras are not necessarily hard to breed and many breed in your tank and you don't even notice it. Hatching and raising tetra fry is the hard part because they are so tiny and delicate. Generally Tetras prefer soft slightly acidic water, but they will live and breed in ph between 6.5 to 7.5. Not all Tetras require high temps so one would be wise to research before buying them. Most tropical fish will reach breeding age between 6 months to a year.

Thats good too know. When 6 months rolls around, which will give me time accumulate resources, i'll see what i can do. The guys at my local fish store told me that i can setup a tank with a breeding trap built into the bottom of of for the eggs to fall down into? I've read that tetras prefer plant cover for breeding which could be tricky considering the slope on the bottom of the tank.
