Bettas are Siamese Fighting Fish...They do not tolerate their own kind, so one per tank. Females can be kept together in the right numbers. It's too bad, because a tank full of these guys would be stunning! I'm glad you like Scotty. He's still very shy, but he'll come around....

All of them are gorgeous especially Robin because of his tail type. I think Sharon you got 3 because 1 just wouldn't match up to Miki's character .

Sharon, I also wouldn't keep bettas together (I did keep two males in the same 10 gallon tank years ago but with two Opaque tank dividers spaced about an inch apart, and one day I had to separate the males as one had jumped the tank divider... thankfully no injuries and I lowered the water level slightly to prevent it in the future.

However, I do know of two people that had 55 gallon or 75 gallon tanks that were heavily planted that kept three or four males in the same tank with little to no trouble as long as each male had enough territory to claim as his own. These people also kept about 15 females in the tank with the males along with tetras and other schooling fish. Strangely enough these two tanks produced fry pretty regularly and healthy fry at that (the adolescent bettas were sold pretty regularly from the fry produced).

Personally I think this would be an expensive experiment, and not one I am willing to try even if in the natural environment there would be multiple males per rice paddy or pool.

I remember being awe inspired at the beauty of the tank and the fish with the rock formations and plants and the color of the fish. (keep in mind this was over 20 years ago)

You could be right, Pwat...Miki WAS special. Scotty looks a lot like Miki, which is why he came home with me, despite Hubby's grumbling!

There are cases where I've heard of it working, if the tank is big enough. I've read that they don't actually live in small pools, the way we picture such pools. These areas of shallow water stretches on for some distance. So, technically, males can escape each other in the wild...who knows???...I've read so many Do's and Don'ts regarding Bettas. I do have Scotty in the Neon and Cardinal tank(10gal) . He's not being bothered so far, nor is he bothering them. I am watching closely....and all I see so far is a very shy Scotty. Maybe the Neons are stressing him...I'll just wait and see.

He should be ok with the neons as long as they are big enough, otherwise they may become his next meal. One of mine ate quite a few of my neons when I was in school one day (years ago); so I netted the rest of the neons and took them to my neighbor who had a 10 gallon tank with other schooling fish (these neons were real young and about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in length).

Your Scotty has a good mamma
