Default Shop Lights

I've just purchased a Flourescent Shop Light fixture 32watts. I also purchased 2 GE Daylight 32watts,2700 lumens, 6500k. I assume each tube is 32watts??? Am I going to be electrically safe? Is this enough appropiate light for good plant growth...Tank is 55gallons...combination of low and med light plants, but would like to expand into more med light plants.

Sharon, it should be enough; however I recomend changing the bulbs with either bulbs for fishtanks that are marked "promotes plant growth" or other such wording or if you can't find those some bulbs for reptile keeping that are marked plant growth.

Yes these bulbs are more expensive than normal.

Thanks...There was no such bulb at WalMart, but I could probably get them at a pet store. However, I have to wait to go out of town again...Grrr!

The total of 64watts will do quite well with most plants. In my flourescent fixtures I went to all white day light bulbs and I can't tell any difference form the plant grow stuff other than the bluish color. The plant grows do make the fish colors better.

The light IS more yellow than the bulbs that came with the tank. You're saying that I should still get good plant growth? They had another type with 3000k, and 40watts. Would that be better, or whiter...

no need to go out of town if you can order them. Petco, petsmart, plant nurseries, or a lot of other sources. Your plant departments of department stores and your hardware departments sometimes have daylight bulbs that 'promote plant growth', also your local nurseries might have them as well as a hardware store.

Try to get the bulbs with the highest Kelvin number. 3000k 6500k ect. The Kelvin number is the intensity of the light spectrum given off by the bulb.(simplified)

The bulbs I purchased are 6500k.After doing some reading, to get a white light I'd have to be around 10000k, and the white light is more conducive to algae growth. I may leave it as it is. This thing cost me $42, and something similiar at the out of town pet store will cost me $120...

I think I understand now, and for my purposes(low to med light plants) I probably have what I need. Here is the tank with the light on...with flash and without...
