Default Hoping to Breed

I've just purchased these two, and am hoping to breed. Sexing Rams is difficult and there are many opinions on how to do this. Can anyone give an educated guess on whether I have a male and female...

Sharon, the Balloon Rams are just Rams that have a mutation in the number of vertebrae near the tail end. Everything should be the same as the regular Rams. Males have the longer front rays of the dorsal fin and females have more blue spangles on the cheeks and around the spot. I have never had them, but I know of others that breed them.

Thanks Dan, I've read that...The problem is that most of the sites will say that neither is an absolute. Both of these have the same dorsal configuration. One has spangles, one doesn't,(which is the method I used when I bought them) and both have black on the anal fins.(indicating female) I'm thinking I have two females. I have these two in a 10gal tank, which is supposed to be a good size for breeding Rams, but if I choose another, hoping to get a male, I'll be pushing it.

I hope you have a male and female. The dorsal fin may grow as the one you think is male ages. If you did find a definite male, the ten gal will still be ok until the pair forms. The extra female would be harassed to death if not moved. Small water changes and a good filter will keep the water good for several fish the size of yours in the ten gal.

I'm hoping the dorsal fin changes as well...There does seem to be a longer ray on the dorsal of the Ram with no "spangles". The thing is that if I'm right in thinking that this one is male, it means that the supposed female is dominant and keeping the male in hiding, most of the time. How likely is that?

Sharon, I failed my fish psychology course in college so I don't know what makes them do what they do. I guess all you can do is watch them and see what happens. Try moving the decor around in a few days to see what happens. It is possible that the female is ready to breed, but the other fish either can't (is not male) or is not ready.

Who knows...I thought males were always ready! I'll watch and see what happens...

Wow Sharon what lovely looking fish. So they are a pair of rams is that right? If so I must do some reading up on them. I guess you have been 'fishy' for some time now judging by numbers of tanks and diverse species you have in those tanks.

And maybe, or maybe not, you will be proven right about maleness being ready????

Well...this may be an exercise in futility. I've been advised on another forum that I have two females. Also Balloon Rams aka Angel Rams rarely breed, and the fry don't survive when they do. I haven't been able to find any info to support or contradict...Guess I've got to do more research!

I haven't been "fishy" for that long...I'm just "out of control"...
