My computer is down so I haven't been able to get on much lately.

I have been doing water changes about every day. Checking the ammonia first. Today it was one. Everyday it gets better. After doing some research I'm surprised that my fish are still alive. The algea is making a come back. I haven't touched the under gravel filter. I thought maybe that was the cause, but I guess it was just "old tank syndrome".

Thanks Dano.
It seams like I'm busier now then if I was working.

I got the ammonia to 0. It has stayed there for a week with no water changes. I did lightly clean and change about 10% on the seventh day. I'm hoping now if I keep that up once a week it will be fine.

The green algae is starting to look pretty bad. I think I need to get a pleco in there. I'm also thinking I need to try a live plant to help out. The ph stays around 6. I'm not sure what is keeping it low. I would like to get it to 6.8 for my community tank.

What kind of fish do you have in there now?............I am reluctant to tell people of this, but I experimented with API AlgaeFix and it works and I have not noticed any side effects yet....It killed my Hair Algae, Beard Algae, and slowed the stuff that grows on the glass and ornaments.

If anyone else has tried this stuff please post your comments on it.

2 upside cats
6 neons
2 bala sharks (they're small)
1 cory
2 red/lemon tetra
2 bleeding hearts
2 head and tail lights
3 orange platy
4 angles

Some of them I wasn't planing on having, but you know how mom's are. I really like the cats, neons and bala sharks. I didn't care much for angles but Mom added 2 without me knowing. Well... they are pretty and it was nice. Then I turn around there's 4.

Everything is still going good.
I also ending up having to replace my filter. Installed an aqua clear 70. From reading on here I was careful and put a section of the old filter in it. To keep bacteria.
All the readings are good. Even, the water is so clear now. Now I just need to take care of the algae. I'm sure it's from the water being so bad. I started using Algaefix. I'm hoping now once I get this under control maintenance will be a little easier. It's already easier now with the ammonia under control.

I don't know if I already said it or not but...
Thanks everyone for your help, especially Dano. It took me a while but I'm getting it.

Good to hear that things are looking better....Let us know what you think of the Algaefix....I have been using it in my 30L and it seems to work.

Instead of starting a new thread, I will add to this one.

What is a good Nitrate reading?
I checked my tank yesterday. I had.
6 PH for some reason it doesn't go any higher. Tap is 6.8.
0 ammionia
0 Nitrite
Nitrate is around 40 and 80. It's hard to tell because it's a card I printed.

I'm a little concerned because I just lost a cory and a bala shark.
I did a PWC.

Nitrate under 20 is preferred.

Oh ok. For some reason I thought 40 was normal.

Can that kill fish? Edit: Yes it does. I just read it though a search.
A couple look like they are having a hard time breathing.
