Sounds like something catching in the impeller or air in the impeller chamber(cavitation).....Could also be something intermittently blocking the intake side.

I don't think that the temperature would affect the function of the filter...May have been trapped air that came out over night....

What are your plans for cycling the tank?

hi,
thanks dano,
filters been fine since so yes think it may have been air in filter?

cloudy yellow water think it maybe the bogwood ive put in
so am i correct in thinking i can add carbon???
if so how???
my tank has an internal filter so im guessing you put it
in with the sponges????
wanted to start the cycle as just wasting time and electric now
all has been checked.

dont want to go and get fish just to cycle they are creatures thats why i wanted those as i would like those too stay in tank???

It is probably the bogwood leaching tannins into the water and this is causing it to turn yellow. You can use carbon and you can also boil the wood for a few hours in a pan of water, keep topping the water up and allow to cool before putting back in the tank. This will take most of the tannins out.

Best Regards,
Norm

Do a fishless cycle. I used an inch piece of frozen salmon my wife had for the cycle in one of my tanks, and it worked great. It will take about 4 weeks to cycle. Make sure you get a master test kit like this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...54&pcatid=4454 that you can find at any chain petstore for about $29.99. Keep testing every few days. The ammonia will spike and than go to 0. Than the nitrites will spike and creep back down to 0. Nitrates will than be in your tank, they will be between 0-20. Any higher and it is dangerous for your fish. This is your cycle and your tank will be ready for fish. It will take almost a full year for your tank to mature, so you must test at least once a week and do a partial water change every week during your weekly cleaning to help keep the parameters.

Best Regards,
Norm

cheers acenorm,
could you tell me did you just put the piece of salmon in tank
to float around???
did it not smell?
could you still see it after 4wks?
and your tank was cycled?
did you do a water change then before adding your fish?
sorry if these seem stupid questions
thanks for help
