Default question about air pumps

ever since Ihave been keeping fish I have always turned off the pumps at night before bed,and switched them on first thing in the morning, everything has always been ok up till now,is this ok to do or should I be leaving them on. 24 7.It has only been the severe winter months Ikept them running to keep the water tempreture constant.I wouldn,t dream of turning the heater off of course, its just the air pums.

If you are talking about filter pumps, I would never turn them off unless cleaning them...Turning them off may kill the beneficial bacteria living in them.
